Developer Portal Upgrades for Faster Payment API Testing
Table of Contents
When an engineer can test a new tool quickly, adoption gets easier.
- An engineer tries a new tool.
- It works like it’s supposed to.
- The engineer tells their manager, “You need to see this.”
This story only happens when evaluations are smooth, intuitive, and uninterrupted. Engineers aren’t just testing a tool; they are deciding whether they trust it. And when the developer experience meets those expectations, that engineer becomes the internal champion who helps the rest of the team get on board.
That’s the philosophy behind how we updated the Basis Theory Developer Portal. A cleaner, modern portal experience meant to get from 0 to 100 faster, with less friction, and fewer hoops to jump through.
What You Will Notice
There were two motivations for upgrading the developer portal.
- Modernize our tech stack so we can make improvements more easily, while keeping the portal experience consistent as we add new capabilities.
- Make workflows more intuitive by revisiting UI flows and removing unnecessary steps. Fewer modals, and fewer moments where you have to ask, “Where do I go next?”
These improvements should be noticeable from the jump. We didn’t rebuild for the sake of keeping our engineers busy; we rebuilt to reduce friction for developers and to move faster when we hear about something that needs to change.
Built AI-First
The developer portal isn’t just a redesign, it’s the introduction of a platform we can use to iterate and improve faster. Behind the scenes, we adopted an AI-assisted workflow that helps us move from feedback to implementation more efficiently. We define how we want the behavior to change using a Product Requirements Document (PRD), then have AI work from that to implement changes.
AI will help us document changes faster, triage issues more effectively, and translate feedback from users into updates that regularly ship. As you test, and something feels unclear, let us know: we can move quickly from concept to launch with the solution you need.
Biggest Difference You’ll Feel Right Away
With v1, navigation and flow complexity slowed users down. There was as much hunting as there was testing.
With our updates, the portal should be a smoother experience for evaluating and testing any aspect of Basis Theory without support from our team. The goal is to replace “Where do I find” questions with “I was testing this feature and…”
The portal is a place for creativity, such as testing edge cases and complex workflows, as well as quickly creating tokens and calling the Proxy. We want you to start testing and become comfortable with the most basic token-creation API calls. Meanwhile, you should be able to explore your more complicated scenarios with less confusion and delay.
Validate these changes for yourself. As you evaluate Basis Theory compared to IXOPAY or VGS, jump into the portal and run your first test in minutes.
